Knowledge Explorer
Learn how to test queries against a knowledge source and visualize knowledge graphs in the Management Portal.
Overview
The Knowledge Explorer page lets you send a test prompt to a knowledge source and inspect the raw result. Use it to check that a data pipeline indexed content correctly, to tune query settings such as result counts and similarity thresholds, and to explore knowledge graphs.
In the sidebar, select Data > Knowledge Explorer.
Prerequisites
- At least one knowledge source with one or more knowledge units. See Creating Knowledge Sources.
- Read access to the knowledge source you want to query.
- For graph features, a knowledge unit with Has Knowledge Graph enabled. See Knowledge Graph Integration.
Select a Knowledge Source
- In -- Select Knowledge Source --, select a knowledge source. The query settings appear, and Access Control appears at the top right of the page so you can manage role assignments on that knowledge source.
- In -- Select Knowledge Units --, optionally select one of the knowledge source's units. The selected unit determines whether the knowledge graph options are available and which graph Render knowledge graph draws. Queries always run against the knowledge source.
- Select the refresh button (tooltip Refresh knowledge sources) to reload the list of knowledge sources.
Configure the Query
Enter a prompt in User prompt to test: ("Enter the user prompt..."), then choose which query types to include with the checkboxes:
| Query type | Default | Settings |
|---|---|---|
| Vector store query | On | Text chunks maximum count (0–30, default 20), Text chunks similarity threshold (0–1, default 0.30), Use semantic ranking, Use hybrid search |
| Knowledge graph query | On when the selected unit has a knowledge graph; off and disabled otherwise | Mapped entities max count (0–100, default 10), Mapped entities similarity threshold (0–1, default 0.35), Relationships max depth (0–5, default 2), All entities max count (0–200, default 20) |
| Knowledge graph vector store query | Follows Knowledge graph query; disabled without a knowledge graph | Text chunks maximum count (0–30, default 20), Text chunks similarity threshold (0–1, default 0.30), Use semantic ranking, Use hybrid search |
| Knowledge units metadata filters | Off | A text box for metadata filters in JSON format. |
Turning Knowledge graph query on or off also turns Knowledge graph vector store query on or off.
Note: The knowledge graph checkboxes reflect the selected knowledge unit. Until you select a unit, they are disabled but still checked, so select a knowledge unit before querying.
Run the Query
Select Query Knowledge Source. The result appears in the Query Result panel as read-only JSON.
The portal shows a warning instead of running the query when:
- No knowledge source is selected ("Please select a knowledge source.").
- The prompt is empty ("Please enter a user prompt.").
- Neither Vector store query nor Knowledge graph query is selected.
- Knowledge units metadata filters is on and the text isn't valid JSON ("Metadata filter must be valid JSON.").
Visualize Knowledge Graphs
The Knowledge Graph panel next to the query result draws graphs:
- Render knowledge graph: The share icon next to the refresh button, shown when the selected knowledge unit has a knowledge graph. Draws the unit's full knowledge graph.
- Render query result: The small share icon in the Query Result header. Draws only the entities, related entities, and relationships returned by the last knowledge graph query.
In the graph, drag to pan and scroll to zoom. Select a node to highlight it and its relationships; select an empty area to clear the highlight.
Tips
- Start with the default thresholds, then raise the similarity threshold if results include unrelated chunks, or lower it if results are empty.
- Compare results with Use hybrid search and Use semantic ranking on and off to see how they affect ranking.
- If a query returns nothing, check the latest run of the pipeline that loads the knowledge unit on the Data Pipeline Runs page.
